Zulumi says:
Shostakovich's hybrid style juxtaposed a wide variety of trends within a single work, such as the neo-classical style (showing the influence of Stravinsky) and a form of post-romantic style (after Mahler). His unique approach to tonality involved the use of modal scales and some astringent neo-classical harmonies à la Hindemith and Prokofiev.

Jun 21, · When we take a look at the 'light' genre (film music, incidental music) Prokofiev keeps up his composure while Shostakovich is busy with copying his ready-made array of templates. Clearly he went for the money. With regard to serious music, 'classical', I both like Prokofiev's War sonatas and Shostakovich' Preludes & Fugues.

Zolora says:
The concerto's uncompromising, violent close is devastating fast, major key music which leaves a defiantly bitter aftertaste. As a coupling, Isserlis and Järvi give us Shostakovich's taut, compact Cello Concerto no 1. Prokofiev's concerto is epic and darkly romantic; this one is pithy and ironic.5/5(10).
