Briefly, radio mogul Cathy Hughes, owner of Radio One, was the general manager at Howard University radio WHUR during the early '70s when she created the format "the quiet storm." She used Smokey Robinson's composition as the theme song. Before long, it caught on around the country and evolved into a new market.

Smokey Robinson Tamla Tamla (label) Soul (CD, LP) Smokey's Family Robinson finds Smokey exploring rather than simply setting out to continue riding the waves made by Quiet Storm. There's bits of dancefloor funk, pared down keyboard soul, spacey jams and a sweet ballad or two – all with Smokey's soul strirring vocals in peak form.

More than thirty years after its release on vinyl – and never having been issued digitally - Warm Thoughts has been packaged in a new compilation with 's Being With You as Smokey Robinson Solo Albums, Vol. 6. And as great as Warm Thoughts is, it stands out even more when compared to its companion album.

You can never go wrong with Smokey Robinson! This is a very old album - actually had the original vynal album, but unfortunatly it was destroyed in a move. I hadn't thought about for years, but recently a local radio was having a Motown weekend and played Quiet Storm. It was an odd song to play for a Motown review, but I'm glad they did/5(46).

“Soft and warm / A quiet storm,” sings Smokey Robinson, crooning like Cupid, the act of love itself given human form. Advertisement “Quiet Storm”—the opening track of Robinson’s album A Quiet Storm—is the start of one of the strongest, most on-the-nose metaphors ever put to music. That strength, like all good strengths, seems.
